5. Introduction to Muslim Prison Board – KwaZulu–Natal

                                   CELEBRATING 42 YEARS OF SERVICE

The Muslim Prison Board – KwaZulu-Natal (MPB-KZN) was established in 1981. The Board
was established out of concern and interest for our incarcerated Muslim brothers and sisters.
The Board was launched by concerned individuals and organisations to serve Muslim
offenders. The MPB-KZN is one of the founding members of the National Muslim Prison Board
         – South Africa (NMPB-SA). The NMPB-SA is the official organization recognized by the
Department of Correctional Services (DCS), representing all Muslim Offenders in the
Correctional Centres. The following are the founding members of the MPB-KZN:

Moulana A H Omarjee Sahib (RA) Imaam A K Asmal (RA)
Moulana I A Razaack (RA) Hajee E Timol (RA)
Moulana M Cassim Sema Sahib (RA) Hajee S Mahomedy (RA)

Moulana Yunus Patel Sahib (RA) Hajee I Sabat
              Moulana A Kathrada

Visiting of offenders in prisons / Correctional Centres has been on-going since the late 70’s
through the efforts of the late Dr Achmat Davids (RA), Imaam Abdurahman Bassier (RA),
Imaam Abdul Kader Asmal (RA), Moulana M O Sema (RA), Moulana L Wadee and many
         other stalwarts.

MPB-KZN believes that spiritual guidance is the cornerstone of rehabilitation, transformation
and re-integration. As such, one of our primary objectives is to regularly visit Muslim Offenders
incarcerated in Correctional Centres and uplift them spiritually by educating them in the
fundamentals of Islam and exposing them to Islamic practices. We hope to provide an Islamic
solution to the reduction and minimizing of crime in South Africa.

MPB-KZN employs the services of authorised Spiritual Care Workers (SCW) to promote Deen
at the respective Correctional Centres voluntarily. Training and Supervision is conducted
annually. Monthly Reports are forwarded to our Office to note progress and facilitate
         challenges.

The MPB-KZN will always pay tribute to the legacy of all the stalwarts who have toiled to serve
the incarcerated. May Allah Ta’ala reward them abundantly as they are a source of inspiration
and encouragement for many of us today.

“None of you can be complete in your Imaan- Faith until

you love for your brother what you love for yourself”
                                                     (Hadith)
